The Gift of Light event held in Melbourne’s Federation Square June 2010, celebrated the significance of light to Melbourne's diverse communities, putting ceremony, tradition, philosophy and enlightenment under the spotlight.

The Gift of Light took many forms across the site, including concerts, film screenings, art and light installations, performance art and the annual Solstice Celebration.

Federation square in conjunction with the Afghan Embassy, AADO and volunteers from the Afghan community took the opportunity to celebrate the unity and respect for different ethnic groups in Afghanistan as a part of the festival.

An overwhelming attendance from the Afghan community demonstrated support for a brighter future for the Afghan community in Melbourne.

Riding for Afghanistan

Starting on the 20th of April 2009, AADO Member Dick Marquardt undertook his epic bicycle ride from Adelaide to Darwin as a way to raise money to provide deep water wells in Afghanistan. Dick then set out to ensure that this main purpose would be achieved, to the maximum benefit of the funds which were raised, in the construction of wells at various schools in Afghanistan.

In May 2010 Dick and his wife Rosemary, AADO's Treasurer, completed their first visit to Afghanistan. With the encouragement of AADO’s Executive Director, Dr Nouria Salehi, and AADO's local Kabul office; and the help of the international NGO, Action Against Hunger (ACF), they were able to inspect progress of the work being undertaken by ACF on construction of wells at four different sites.

All four wells have now been completed and delivering fresh, clear, drinkable water. As a result of this effort, at least 2000 students this year and similar numbers in following years will now have access to fresh, clean water.
